#3 Tampa Prepared for Short Trip to Rollins
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa baseball team enters week 13 of the season on a six-game winning streak following a series sweep of Saint Leo in a Sunshine State Conference matchup over the weekend and a midweek victory over Eckerd. Tampa is now ranked third in NCAA II baseball with an overall record of 34-7-1 and a 13-5 conference mark to lead the SSC.
The Spartans are off until the weekend when they travel to
Winter Park, Fla. to take on SSC opponent Rollins in a three-game
series beginning with a single game on Friday and a doubleheader on
Saturday. Rollins enters this weekend's matchup in seventh place in
the SSC with an in-conference mark of 7-10 and an overall record of
27-19-1.
Last week was a good week for Spartan hitters, as the Tampa batting
order posted a .350 combined batting average while outscoring its
opponents 39-23 in the four-game span. The Spartans were led by SSC
Player of the Week Jesus Barroso, a junior from Panama City, Panama
who drove in a team-high eight runs during the week, including his
first home run as a Spartan in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
Barroso posted a .600 batting average for the week on 12-20 hitting
to raise his season batting average to .346, good for fourth on the
team.
Tampa's pitching staff has experienced a youth movement this
season, as three freshmen have made regular contributions from both
the bullpen and the starting rotation. Right-handed pitchers Josh
Bowman and Daniel Foltz have combined for a 2.59 earned run average
and a win-loss record of 10-0. Foltz recently moved into second
place on the team with six wins following a 2-0 week in which he
allowed two runs on five hits in six innings of work, while Bowman
became the fourth pitcher in Tampa history to throw a no-hitter
earlier this season with a seven inning shutout of Eckerd on March
21.
