Spartans Take Series Finale Against Bobcats
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 2 University of Tampa Spartans improved to 4-0 on the season when they took the series finale against Georgia College and State University with a 7-4 victory, dropping the Bobcats to 1-3 overall.
GC&SU managed two hits off Tampa starter Josh Bowman in the first inning, but the right-hander held them hitless through the next five to earn his second win of the year. The Bobcats starter Dylan Lightell (0-1) got out of a bases-loaded, no out jam in the third inning against Tampa, but couldn't escape the Spartan offense in the fourth.
After walks to Jose Jimenez and Devin Gonzalez, Nick Nordgren was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jimenez would come around to score on a wild pitch to put Tampa on the board. Following a pitching change, catcher Mike Bourdon was walked before second baseman Brenton Cianci stroked a two-run double down the right field line giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead. After another wild pitch, Bourdon scored. A Tyler Cox single scored Cianci to cap the five-run inning.
The Bobcats brought the game back to within one in the seventh inning before senior lefty Jimmy Moser stopped the rally. Tampa added two more runs thanks to a two RBI single by Jimenez to increase the lead to three.
Moser would go on to throw a scoreless eighth, setting up the ninth for junior transfer Alex Koronis. Koronis sat GC&SU down in order to close out the victory for his first save of the season.
