
#11 Tampa Takes Down #14 Saint Joseph’s
TAMPA, Fla - The No. 11 University of Tampa Spartans rebounded from Thursday night's loss with a 10-7 victory over No. 14 Saint Joseph's. The win brings Tampa to a 16-7 mark on the season while the Pumas fall to 9-4.
Saint Joseph's put up one run in the first off Tampa starter John Wiedenbauer (4-0), but the Spartans came back with four runs in the second to take the lead.
Right fielder Steven Broschofsky started off the rally with a four-pitch walk. Jared Simon singled and Casey Albanese drew another walk before Nick Nordgren stroked a double to left field scoring two. Tyler Cox followed with an RBI single scoring Albanese and, on a throwing error from the shortstop, Nordgren, to put UT up 4-1.
Saint Joseph's added two more in the third, but Tampa countered with three runs of their own in the inning. Jesus Barroso reached base on one of six Puma errors and Jose Jimenez singled to start the inning before Broschofsky doubled in another run. Simon lined a two-run homer over the left field wall to make the score 7-3. Simon finished the night 3-for-4 while Garrett Maines also homered for Tampa.
The Spartans used the 10 strikeout performance from Wiedenbauer to seal the win. Wiedenbauer finished with five innings of work, allowing four runs, three earned, while walking none.
Junior Alex Koronis threw a one-two-three ninth inning to pick up his third save of the season.
