#11 Tampa Drops Quincy University 13-3
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 11 University of Tampa Spartans defeated Quincy University 13-3 Saturday night to improve to 17-7. Quincy drops to 4-8.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead in the first inning off starter Carmine Giardina (2-0) with two runs on two hits but settled down afterward to throw four consecutive scoreless innings. Giardina would finish the evening surrendering only three runs, two earned on three hits in five innings of work while fanning six.
In the bottom half of the fourth, Jose Jimenez would reach on a single to right and was followed by a Jared Simon walk. Both of them would come around to score on a Brett McKean single to right field. Tampa would score once more to take the lead on a Casey Albanese sacrifice fly that scored Garrett Maines.
The Spartans would score in every inning from that point on adding two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. In the seventh inning, Jared Simon launched a two-run shot to extend the Spartan lead to five.
A pair of hit by pitches from Albanese and Nick Nordgren got things started in the eighth. Both would score on a Jesus Barroso single. Jimenez would drive Barroso in and Tampa would go on to score two more runs in the inning to finish with 13.
Alex Koronis, who came in relief of Giardina, tossed three scoreless innings and picked up five strikeouts. Jimmy Moser came on to throw a scoreless ninth to seal the game for the Spartans.
