Jimenez Leads #19 Spartans Past Owls

TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 19 University of Tampa Spartans overpowered the Southern Connecticut State University Owls 14-7 on Thursday night in a nonconference game. The win moves Tampa to 25-9 on the season while the Owls drop to 7-9.
The Spartans outhit the Owls 20-9 in the game, their second highest total on the season. Jose Jimenez led the Tampa offense with four hits on the night including two homers and a double. Jimenez also finished with six RBIs. Designated hitter Mike Schwartz also popped four hits in the game with a walk and a run batted in.
Tampa put three runs on the board in the first to back starter Carmine Giardina (4-0) who threw six innings allowing four runs, but none earned. Giardina struck out five Owls and gave up five hits while walking three. Max Kreuter relieved Giardina, tossing two hitless innings without yielding a run.
The story of night, however, was the Tampa bats. Seven Spartans recorded multi-hit games and Nick Nordgren also hit a two-run shot in the contest.
