#20 Spartans Sweep Series Against Tigers
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The No. 20 University of Tampa baseball team completed the four-game series sweep on Sunday against the Stillman College Tigers with an 8-6 come-from-behind victory. The win pushes the Spartans to 10-3 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 3-10.
Stillman struck early this time, putting up two runs in the second inning and two more in the third against Tampa starter John Wiedenbauer. Trailing 4-0 in the fifth, the Spartans pulled the game to within one after Dylan Brown and Tyler Cox drew walks to lead off the inning. Correy Figueroa followed with a single before Mike Schwartz popped his sixth double of the weekend to drive in two. Jared Simon added an RBI groundout in the inning, his team-leading 24th RBI of the season.
The Tigers countered with a two-run inning in the bottom half of the fifth but a three-run double off the bat of Patrick Donahue in the seventh knotted the contest at 6-6.
It was once again Tyler Cox providing the ninth-inning heroics for the Spartans. After Donahue led off the frame with a single and Devin Gonzalez walked, Cox drove the pitch into deep right field for a triple, clearing the bases and putting Tampa on top 8-6.
Kris Castellanos collected his first win as a Spartan in the contest. Castellanos (1-0) allowed just two hits in 4.2 innings of relief while striking out three.
The Spartans return home Wednesday for a 6 p.m. nonconference matchup against Saint Leo. Livestats and webcast will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
