#15 Spartans Drop Two To #22 Blazers
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 15 University of Tampa baseball team dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against No. 22 Valdosta State University, falling in game one 8-2 and 10-0 in the series finale. The Spartans move to 12-5 on the year while the Blazers improve to 12-4.
The Blazers broke through first in game one, notching four runs in the third inning off Tampa starter John Wiedenbauer. The Spartans got two back in the bottom half when Tyler Cox stroked his second homer of the year, a two-run shot to left field scoring Correy Figueroa.
Valdosta State added two more in the fifth, one in the sixth, and a final run in the eighth to put the Blazers up 8-2. Jeremy Forbus (1-0) got the win, throwing five innings in relief of Tanner Fudge. Forbus allowed just two hits and no runs to the Spartan offense, while Wiedenbauer (1-1) took the loss.
In game two, Blazer starter Ross Gusky was too much for the Spartans, who managed just three hits in the contest. Valdosta State used a big five-run third inning to back Gusky (4-0) and added another five in the game to make the score 10-0. Carmine Giardina (0-1) was tabbed with the loss.
