TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 16 University of Tampa baseball team reached double figure runs for the fifth straight game with a doubleheader sweep of Sunshine State Conference opponent Nova Southeastern University. The Spartans won by scores of 15-5 and 14-3.
In game one, the Sharks scored first with a pair in the second inning. The Spartans evened the score with two in the third and tagged on four in the fifth. UT put the game out of reach with an eight run eighth inning.
Dan Catalano connected on a grand slam in the eighth inning as Mike Schwartz, Jared Simon and Mike Blanke also added home runs for Tampa in game one. Blanke led UT with three hits while Schwartz drove in four runs.
John Wiedenbauer started for Tampa and struck out four in 4.0 innings. Tom Meagher (4-0) earned the victory going 2.0 innings while yielding just one hit. Evan Stobbs earned his first save as a Spartan, pitching two perfect innings with two strikeouts.
Tampa came out slugging in game two, putting a seven-spot on the board in the first inning. The Spartans added five in the fourth as Josh Bowman (3-1) picked up the win with 6.0 innings. He notched four strikeouts with no walks.
Simon hit the third grand slam of the series for the Spartans as Larry Walicki connected on two home runs, including a mammoth shot in the first inning that cleared the netting and landed on the Stadium Center balcony. Brad Roberts also homered for UT.
Blanke hit .800 in the two games, going 4-for-5 as he was also hit by three pitches. Simon knocked in six runs on the day as Correy Figueroa joined Blanke for team honors with four hits.
