
Spartans Set To Host, Compete In NCAA South Regional
TAMPA, Fla. - For the fourth time in the last five years, The University of Tampa will host the NCAA Division II Baseball South Regional. The field consists of eight schools with the Spartans meeting Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Tech on Thursday at 1:15 p.m.
Tampa (42-8) earned the No. 2 seed for the tournament as Southern Arkansas University (43-8) enters as the No. 1 seed. The remainder of the field for the double elimination tournament includes No. 3 Valdosta State University (42-15), No. 4 Florida Southern College (39-14), No. 5 Rollins College (38-17), No. 6 University of West Florida (36-18), No. 7 Florida Tech (38-14) and No. 8 Albany State University (33-14).
The tournament will span five days with the championship game(s) slated for Monday. The winner of the regional will advance to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships in Cary, N.C., on May 22-29.
After winning the 2010 SSC championship, the Spartans are also No. 2 nationally in the current Ping!Baseball top-30 poll. The South Regional field includes seven nationally ranked teams, including No. 3 Southern Arkansas, No. 9 Valdosta State, No. 13 Florida Southern, No. 16 West Florida, No. 18 Rollins and No. 20 Florida Tech.
UT brings an 84-44 overall record in NCAA South regional action and are winners of five straight games at the UT Baseball Field in postseason play. Since 2006, Tampa is 12-1 while hosting a regional.
Tickets for the tournament may be purchased for $10 (adults) and $5 (senior citizens/students). Children under 5 will be admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets may be purchased online or at the gate. Click here to buy tickets online.
