Spartans Conclude Season With Loss To Georgia College
CARY, N.C. - The University of Tampa (46-11) baseball team saw its season come to an end at the 2010 NCAA Division II Championships as it was edged by a 2-1 score by Georgia College & State University (40-16).
GCSU got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning.
Richard Pirkle drew a two-out walk from Tampa starter Josh Bowman
(8-5), and scored all the way from first on a double to
right-center by Yaun.
Tampa tied the game again in its next at-bat, using a bunt single,
an errant throw to second on a bunt attempt, and a two-out single
up the middle by Mike Schwartz to knot the score at 1-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, a leadoff walk by Steve Muoio and
infield singles by Shawn Ward and Pirkle loaded the bases for Yaun,
who lifted a fly ball to center to drive in his second run of the
game and give the Bobcats the lead again.
Patrick Donahue had three of Tampa's eight hits as Schwartz added a pair. Bowman went 6.1 innings for the Spartans, giving up two runs and striking out eight Bobcats.
The Spartans conclude the season as the Sunshine State Conference and NCAA South Regional champions. UT also registered the program's eighth straight 40-plus win campaign under head coach Joe Urso.
