
Josh Bowman Picked By Oakland In 10th Round Of MLB Draft
TAMPA, Fla. - University of Tampa pitcher Josh Bowman was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 10th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft, going with pick number 305.
"Josh is by far the hardest working pitcher we have ever had," says associate head coach Sam Militello. "The improvements he has made have put him in this position to be drafted today."
A junior from St. Petersburg, Fla., Bowman was a second-team all-Sunshine State Conference selection while also earning ABCA/Rawlings first-team all-South Region and second-team Daktronics all-region accolades.
He concluded his senior season with an 8-5 record and 3.92 ERA. In 85.0 innings, he notched 85 strikeouts. He concluded his 2010 season with an eight strikeout performance in 6.1 innings of work against Georgia College & State in the NCAA Division II Championships. His top performance was an 8.0 inning effort versus Florida Tech on May 13, allowing no runs while striking out 10.
As a sophomore, Bowman was a first-team CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Baseball Team member. While ranking second on the team in games started with nine. He also posted 52 strikeouts in 45.1 innings.
He compiled a 5-0 record with a 3.36 ERA in 15 starts as a freshman. His top effort was a no-hitter against Eckerd Mar. 21, throwing seven innings and striking out 11. He collected his first win in a five-inning effort against Wayne State and struck out a team-high 71 batters in 72.1 innings. He also earned the start in the first game of the NCAA II Baseball Championship for the Spartans.
Bowman attended Northeast High School, where he played for head coach Eric Wagman and Roman Johnson. He was named Pinellas County Pitcher of the Year while also garnering all-county first team and all-state third team honors. His success in the classroom also helped him become the salutatorian of high school class. He also played basketball, where he once scored 20 points in a game.
The hurler is also active in the community, where he has taken mission trips to West Virginia, Tennessee, Puerto Rico and Mexico. He also performs volunteer work through Faith Covenant Church and volunteered with Children's Ministries and Metropolitan Ministries food drives.
