#14 Spartans Single Out Warriors In Win
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 14 University of Tampa baseball team got back on track on Tuesday night with a 6-2 win over Wayne State (Mich.). A big second inning propelled the Spartans (15-7) past the Warriors (6-4) to give them their second consecutive victory.
After the Spartans got on the board in the first inning thanks to a passed ball, a flurry of singles in the second broke the game open. Tyler Ding opened the home half with a base knock to right and catcher Mike Bourdon followed with one of his own to put runners on the corners. Freshman Zack Gawrych beat out a grounder to the second baseman to drive in Ding before a wild pitch scored Bourdon. Eric Grabe and Andrew Jones also plated runners with base hits in the inning to give Tampa a 6-0 advantage.
The Spartans outhit the Warriors 12-8 in the game. Each UT hit was of the single variety. Grabe and Jones finished with a game-high three hits each.
After two scoreless innings each from Justin Leith and Max Kreuter, respectively, Wayne State responded with runs in the fifth and sixth off reliever Ryan Kennedy. With two outs and bases loaded in the sixth, Tim Kiley entered to promptly end the scoring threat.
Kiley finished with 2.1 innings of work in relief before Aaron Gerbasi took over for a scoreless ninth. Kreuter (1-0) picked up the win, his first in six appearances this season.
The Spartans return to the field on Friday night at 6 p.m. for a three-game Sunshine State Conference set against 2009 national champion Lynn University.
