Panthers Shutout Spartans In SSC Series Opener
MELBOURNE, Fla. - The No. 10 University of Tampa (19-8, 4-3 SSC) baseball team dropped an 8-0 decision in the first of a three-game Sunshine State Conference set with Florida Tech (18-10, 4-6 SSC).
Andrew Jones accounted for two of UT's hits as the Spartans were unable to conquer FIT ace Jonathan Cornelius (4-1). He went the distance for the Panthers and had seven strikeouts in 9.0 innings of work.
Josh Thrailkill (2-1) started for Tampa, going 5.0 innings as the pitcher of record for the Spartans.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Tech extended its advantage to 4-0 with a three-spot in the fourth and also scored in each of its final three at bats to put the game out of reach.
The same two teams will meet again on Saturday in a doubleheader that is slated for a noon start time. Live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
