MELBOURNE, Fla. - The No. 10 University of Tampa Spartans (21-8, 6-3 SSC) swept the Saturday conference double header against the Florida Tech Panthers (18-12, 4-8 SSC) by scores of 14-10 and 5-2, respectively.
After falling behind FIT in the first game by a tally of 10-1 after three innings, the Spartan bats woke up with a seven-run sixth inning. Andrew Jones started the frame with a double and run scored as Damon Elder, Mike Bourdon, Trace Venegas, Zach Gawrych, Taylor Wrenn, and Patrick Donahue all plated. The competition witnessed 19 hits for the Spartans, including four doubles and a triple.
Gawrych led the rally for the Spartans, going 3-5 with a pair of doubles and the lone three-bagger. The freshman centerfielder also added three RBI and three runs scored in the first game. Eric Grabe also added a pair of RBI on three hits to aid in the comeback.
Tim Kiley (2-0) was the pitcher of record for the Spartans as he tossed the last three innings, allowing one run and striking out three.
The rubber match witnessed the Spartans taking an early lead as Donahue led off the game with a single and would be driven in courtesy of a Shawn Pleffner sacrifice.
The Spartans would not give up the lead as it added insurance in four of the last five innings. Donahue, Grabe, and Jones all submitted multi-hit games as Grabe went 3-4 and Jones posted a 2-3 game with a pair of RBI.
Justin Leith (1-0) earned the victory, going 4.2 strong innings for UT while striking out three and allowing an unearned run. Aaron Gerbasi earned his first save of the season as he pitched 2.1 innings and also struck out a trio.
