
Spartans Host Sailfish in Weekend Series
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 12 University of Tampa baseball team has returned to form after winning their weekend series against Florida Southern College and shellacking Florida Tech in a non-conference match Tuesday night. The Spartans welcome Palm Beach Atlantic in their second to last weekend series of the 2011 campaign.
The Spartans enter the series with a 30-14 record while the Sailfish hold a 25-22 tally for their three-game set.
Tampa routed Florida Tech in their last matchup 11-1 as 14 hits paced the Spartan offense. First baseman Trace Venegas launched his first homer of the season, a two-run jack to left field. Righty Daniel Foltz earned his third win (3-1) in relief of starter Shane Riedie.
The Sailfish split their weekday twinbill with Florida Tech, winning 3-2 in their victory over the FIT Panthers. Jorge Chavarria scored a key run with a late inning two-bagger to seal the game two victory for PBA.
UT holds the all-time record against the independent Sailfish, winning 5-1 in all matchups. Game one will be played Friday at the UT Baseball Field, start time slated for 6 p.m. Then the Spartans will finish out the series with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Live stats as well as a live video webcast will be provided through www.tampaspartan.com.
