PBA Sails Past Spartans
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 12 University of Tampa baseball team faltered a 6-4 lead as the Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish defeat the Spartans 8-6 in the first of their three game series. PBA improves to 26-22 while UT plummets to 30-15.
Catcher Adam Pendleton and Taylor Wrenn each homered on the tough loss, as Pendlton tallied two each of extra-base knocks, runs and RBI. Reliever Kenny Frosch earned the win pitching 1.1 innings allowing no hits. PBA closer Alejandro De Moyo earned his sixth save on the tough south region loss. Righty Tim Kiley was tabbed with the loss allowing two earned runs in 1.2 innings of work.
After PBA took a quick one run lead, the Spartans rebounded as junior transfer Wrenn belted his first homer of the season, a two-run shot to take the lead for Tampa at 2-1. Damon Elder padded the lead with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Shawn Pleffner who doubled earlier in the inning.
The Sailfish re-upped with the Spartans as they scored two in the second frame to knot the score at three all.
Pendleton jacked his solo homer in the home half of the second to regain the lead in the offense riddled matchup. The teams combined for 11 hits in two innings of play as Tampa leads by a slim 4-3 margin.
After an inning long offense hiatus, the Sailfish tied the game for the second time as an RBI single from Luis Mejia evens the score in the fourth inning.
The red-hot Pendleton continued to tear up opposing pitchers as he picks up yet another extra-base hit, a RBI two-bagger to left center, to reclaim the lead. Patrick Donahue smacked a single through the right side to score Pendleton and cushion the Spartan lead 6-4.
The Sailfish regained the lead after a three-run eighth inning to own a 7-6 lead heading to the home half. PBA struck again by way of the sacrifice fly, to add an insurance run with the 8-6 lead heading into the final inning of play.
