
#2 Spartans Blank Falcons for Second Straight Shutout Win
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 2 University of Tampa baseball team defeated the Bentley College Falcons on Saturday night in the two teams' second matchup of a three-game series. The Spartans shut out the Falcons by a score of 8-0. The win improves Tampa's record to 2-0 while Bentley's falls to 0-2.
Senior center fielder Andrew Jones went 2-for-5 on the night boasting three of the teams eight RBI. A pair of Spartan sophomores, Tyler Ding and Zach Gawrych both went 2-for-3. Ding tallied two singles and Gawrych notched one single and a double. Senior Eric Grabe also posted two hits against Falcon pitching.
Starting on the mound for the Spartans, transfer Ben Brown pitched a complete four innings and collected the win. The right hander let up four hits while striking out the same amount. Junior Michael Zaccardo pitched two innings of relief. Following Zaccardo, senior Evan Stobbs closed it out after three innings and was awarded the save. Zaccardo and Stobbs combined to strike out three batters.
Tampa brought in its first run in the bottom of the first, put up two in the second and one in the fourth. A big four-run inning in the eighth left the Falcons' chances further out of their reach.
Bentley's lineup posted five hits against the Spartans' pitching. Starter Jeff Croteau struck out three in three innings pitched. Croteau was tabbed with his first loss of the season.
The two teams return to the UT baseball field Sunday morning at 11 a.m. for their last of their three-game series.
