Sean Bierman Becomes First Spartan Selected in MLB Draft
TAMPA, Fla. - University of Tampa baseball player Sean Bierman was the first Spartan to be called at the 2012 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft, going in the 10th round to the Tampa Bay Rays at pick number 332.
Bierman, a left-handed pitcher from Kinnelon, N.J., was named both the Sunshine State Conference and Daktronics South Region Pitcher of the Year during his senior season at UT.
He led the Spartans with an 8-3 record and 2.27 earned run average (ERA). In 83.1 innings pitched, Bierman notched 85 strikeouts while opposing batters hit just .241 against the Spartan ace.
After playing his first two collegiate seasons at Vanderbilt University, Bierman joined UT in 2010 where he made an immediate impact on an SSC and NCAA South Region championship squad. He concluded his junior campaign with a 4-2 record and 3.60 ERA.
This marks the second time Bierman has been selected in the first-year player draft, going in the 42nd round to the Cincinnati Reds in 2007.
Bierman joins a long list of Spartans who have been selected in the MLB Draft, which has now produced 33 players since 2006. In that span, Tampa has had at least three players selected in each draft, including a school record in nine in 2010.
