TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 4 University of Tampa baseball team took both games of Friday's double-header against Georgia College & State University. The pair of wins improve the Spartans to 4-1 while the Bobcats were handed their first two losses of the season with a 3-2 overall record.
Game Two 7-6
Junior Drew Doty hit 3-for-7 on the day, including a pair of homers in the first game. The leftfielder ended the two games with a pair of runs scored and five RBI. Designated hitter B.J. Zimmerman had a game-winning home run in the first match, as his solo-shot gave Tampa the lead.
In the premier matchup of the double header, both sides amassed 12 hits each. The back-and-forth battle of the bats ended with an 11-9 UT win as the contest saw five lead changes.
Outfielder Doty smacked a pair of home runs, good for four RBI. The latter of the two was a game-tying bomb to right field. Some more eighth inning heroics from Zimmerman gave Tampa the lead with a solo blast over the scoreboard in right field.
Relief pitcher Caleb Kellogg was credited with the win, pitching 2.2 innings, registering four strikeouts and only allowing a single hit. Bobcats' hurler Patrick Olvaney was tabbed with the loss, allowing two runs off two-hits.
The Bobcats looked for redemption in the second game of the twin-bill, tacking on an early three runs in the second frame. Tampa mirrored in the third, putting up three runs of their own, but the GC added an insurance run in the top of the inning to remain in the lead 4-3 after the third.
Georgia College continued to pad their lead with a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, leading the home squad 6-4.
The Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead 7-6.
