Spartans Club Cougars in Road Meeting
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 3 University of Tampa baseball team traveled to Georgia to take on Columbus State University for a Thursday afternoon contest.
The two teams have not faced one another since the 2007 World Series, where the Spartans surpassed the Cougars for the national championship. Today Tampa defeated Columbus State 13-5 at Cougars Stadium.
With the win the Spartans improve to 6-1 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 2-6.
The Spartan bats came alive in the bottom of the third inning, taking the lead. Jake Schrader was today's standout going 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBI. Right fielder Zach Gawrych also had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-5 on the day. Jacob Tillotson and Drew Doty each added to the on slot with a home run of their own.
Columbus State out-hit the Spartans 13-12, but couldn't ever get a good rally going. On multiple occasions, they were left with men on base. Shortstop Jimmy Obermark went 3-for-5 with two RBI on the day.
The win was rewarded to relief pitcher Mike Adams (1-0), while starting cougars pitcher Sean Muller (0-1) took the loss. Adams pitched two and a third innings with four strikeouts. Muller went three and a third, surrendering six earned runs in today's match up.
