Spartans Take Sting Out of Cedarville
TAMPA, Fla. - Some late inning magic from the lineup lead the No. 4 University of Tampa baseball team to a 14-10 comeback win over Cedarville University. The Spartans improve to 13-2 while the Yellow Jackets drop to 2-4 on their 2013 season.
Outfielders Zach Gawrych and Michael Danner scored a pair of home runs as the junior Gawrych hit 3-for-5 with his five RBI. Junior Danner launched a late inning homer to score two runs while also picking up a stolen base for the home team.
The Spartans scored 12 runs in the final two innings to come back from an 8-2 deficit taking the lead 14-10.
Junior Connor Obrochta gave Tampa its first lead of the game with a deep sacrifice fly to center field in the eighth to plate B.J. Zimmerman. Gawyrch followed with a three-run shot over the left field fence to cap off the Spartan comeback, 14-10.
Left-handed pitcher Dan Zlotnick earned the late inning win for Tampa, pitching the final five outs of the game. Senior Shawn Ferris picked up his first collegiate save as the righty recorded the final two outs with one pitch that ended in a routine double play.
Cedarville reliever Tyler Hurt was credited with the loss, allowing five runs in his relief stint.
Tampa opens up Sunshine State Conference play on the road against Florida Tech. The three game set will begin Friday March 8th at 6 p.m. and conclude in twin-bill fashion Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available through www.tampaspartans.com.
