Spartans Top Upper Iowa in Tuesday Win
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 3 University of Tampa baseball team defeated Upper Iowa University 5-2 in a Tuesday night contest. The victory gives the Spartans a 17-3 season tally while the Peacocks fall to 6-4.
Spartan slugging duo Michael Danner and Drew Doty recorded a trio of extra base hits as Danner hustled his way to a pair of triples and Doty launched the game's lone home run.
Junior Doty blasted his two-run shot to open up scoring in the third, giving Tampa a 2-0 lead. An inning later the Spartans added an insurance run thanks to a RBI double off the bat of shortstop Jacob Tillotson, good for a 3-0 margin.
First baseman Danner tacked on another pair of runs in the sixth, hustling his way to a three-bagger. Tillotson later scored the junior with a well placed RBI bunt, his second hit of the night as Tampa owns a 5-1 lead heading into the seventh inning of play.
Starting pitcher David Heintz (3-0) earned the win as the freshman tossed five shut-out innings, scattering five hits and picked up a pair of strikeouts. Peacocks starter Tanner Funke was tabbed with the loss after his six innings of work, allowing nine hits and five runs.
Tampa continues Sunshine State Conference play this Friday with a three-game set against Saint Leo University. The first game at the UT Baseball Field will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday with a twin-bill scheduled for Saturday with a 1 p.m. start time.
