Tampa Baseball Cashes in on Barry
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The No. 2 University of Tampa defeated Barry University 6-4 in the first of their three game conference matchup. The Spartans improve to 25-4 with an 8-2 Sunshine State Conference tally while the Bucs dip to 20-12 with a 6-7 SSC record.
Tampa took an early lead in the first inning after scoring three runs thanks to a trio of free bases. The Spartans then added two runs in the top of the second off a Tyler Ding three-bagger.
Barry battled back in the home half of the second inning with four runs off six Buccaneer hits. The hosts threatened again in the bottom of the fifth, but were silenced as reliever Mike Adams tossed the final five innings to earn his third win of the season. The senior struck out eight batters without allowing a hit in his stellar relief appearance.
Corner infielder Jake Schrader led all players with a 3-for-5 performance while sophomore Stephen Dezzi notched a multi-hit game with a single and a double for the Spartans.
Tampa will finish its road series against Barry tomorrow in doubleheader fashion. The first game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start with the second game scheduled for 3 p.m.
