LAKELAND, Fla. - The No. 3 University of Tampa baseball team split its Saturday twin-bill with Sunshine State Conference rival Florida Southern College. The Spartans sit at a 28-6 overall record (11-4 SSC) while the Mocs end the day 15-18 with a 7-5 tally in conference matchups.
Outfielder Michael Danner continued his torrid series, tallying six hits between the two games, including a five-hit second game. The junior recorded six RBI on the day and was a terror for FSC pitching.
UT dropped the first game of the doubleheader with an 8-5 final score. Despite the loss, first baseman Sean O'Brien notched a perfect 2-for-2 performance at the plate, picking up a pair of walks to lead the Spartan offense.
Mocs staring pitcher Alex Norris (2-2) earned the win, tossing five innings for FSC. Spartan hurler Jon Keller (1-3) was tabbed with the loss in his four-plus innings of work.
Tampa bounced back to win the second game 10-3 as the hot bat of O'Brien continued with a two-hit, three RBI showing. Catcher Adam Pendleton hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth inning.
Leftfielder Danner smacked five hits, including two doubles to lead all players in the second game while also coming around to score twice.
Spartan starter Eric Luksis (4-1) tossed five innings of two hit baseball, allowing a single run to earn the win. Brian Johnson of Florida Southern was tabbed with the loss in his five innings of work.
