TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 2 University of Tampa baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader against Palm Beach Atlantic University. With the split day, the Sailfish leave Tampa with the series, the Spartans first series loss of the season.
With the win, Tampa records their 30th straight season of at least 30 wins, dating back to 1984. Head coach Joe Urso helmed the program for 13 seasons and during his tenure the Spartans have never dipped below 36 victories.
The Spartans sit at a 30-8 overall record while the Sailfish depart Tampa with a 22-17 tally.
Tampa took the first game by a 7-2 score behind a 3-for-3 performance by B.J. Zimmerman. The senior tallied a double and two each of RBI and walks in his perfect day at the plate.
The Spartan infield of Jacob Tillotson (SS), Michael Danner (1B) and Sean O'Brien (2B) each recorded a multi-hit morning while Tillotson plated a run.
Reliever Mike Adams (4-0) tossed three shut-out innings, allowing a single hit and sending five Sailfish down on strikes to earn the win. PBA starter Andres Lopez (4-5) was tabbed with the loss in his six innings of work.
UT faltered the second game, as they were unable to overcome the Sailfish and lost the second game X-X of the double header.
Centerfielder Connor Obrochta struck again with a solo home run. The junior totaled two hits on the game as Adam Pendleton was the only other Spartan to record multiple base knocks.
Tampa starter Eric Luksis (4-2) tossed four innings, allowing four runs for the Spartan loss while PBA starter Jonathon Kies (6-1) was the victor in his four-plus innings of work.
UT will welcome a familiar foe in Florida Tech on Tuesday, with a non-conference matchup scheduled for a 6 p.m. start. Live stats as well as a live video webcast will be available through www.tampaspartans.tv.
