
Spartans Sweep Lynn on Senior Day, Conclude Regular Season
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 3 University of Tampa baseball team concluded its regular season with a series sweep of Lynn University. The Spartans gain sole ownership of the Sunshine State Conference and pick up a trio of crucial south region victories as they look to the postseason.
UT ends the regular season with a 39-10 overall record with a SSC-best 19-5 in conference matchups while the Fighting Knights fall to 30-20 with a 13-11 SSC record.
Tampa won the first contest by a 12-6 score behind a solid outing from B.J. Zimmerman. The senior designated hitter swung 3-for-4 with five RBI, including his fifth home run of the season. All three of his hits were for extra-bases as he smacked a pair of doubles in addition to his homer.
Outfielder Michael Danner and second-baseman Zach Alvord recorded two hits and two runs apiece. First baseman Sean O'Brien crossed the plate three times for Tampa. The Spartans continue to hit the ball well as the squad amassed 15 hits for the first game of the twin-bill.
The Fighting Knight offense was led by Jason Matusik who roped a two-run homer for the visitors while outfielder Mike Gonzalez picked up a pair of hits with two RBI.
Senior starting pitcher Ben Brown (6-0) earned his sixth win of the season, tossing five-plus innings for UT. Lynn hurler Kentrail Pierce (7-4) was given the loss in his two innings of work.
Centerfielder Connor Obrochta and junior Alvord were the second game standouts as Tampa took that contest 13-7. The duo notched three hits each while combining for seven RBI. Both players crossed the plate twice in the final game of the sweep. Shortstop Tillotson tallied another two-hit outing in the second half, rounding out the Spartan attack.
Left-handed pitcher Eric Luksis (5-2) won his senior day start pitching five complete innings in his final regular season start as a Spartan. Fighting Knights pitcher TJ Sullivan (0-1) was tabbed with the loss in his first start of the season.
