Spartans Rout Cardinals in 15-Run Barrage
TAMPA, Fla.-The No.1 ranked University of Tampa baseball team dominated Saginaw Valley State University by a score of 15-6 Friday afternoon at the UT Baseball Field.
With the win the Spartans improve to 12-1 on the year and extended their win streak to five games, while the Cardinals drop to 0-1 in their first contest of the season.
Tampa had a number of key contributors in their offensive explosion as five different players ended the game with two hits. Senior slugger Tyler Ding led UT with four RBI and a pair of hits, including a double. Premier hitters Orlando Rivera and Michael Danner both went a perfect 2-for-2 on the day.
Pinch-hitter Quinn Pippin came into the game and blasted a first-pitch, two-run homer to deep right field to extend Tampa's lead in the fourth. Catcher Nick Tindall also contributed, hitting 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI.
The Spartans maintained a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the third inning when UT's offense came to life. A lead-off Connor Obrochta walk and back-to-back singles by Rivera and Ding, began the plethora of Tampa runs. After a Danner walk, Tindall and Stephen Dezzi followed-up with two singles of their own. Tampa led 10-0 after three and never looked back.
Pippin's home run in the fourth further increased the Spartan lead to 13-1.
Starting pitcher Trey Oest (5-0) threw seven innings allowing five runs and striking out nine batters. Visiting pitcher Shane Cochran picked up the loss after pitching two innings.
Tampa will continue its homestand with a three-game set against Walsh University, with a double header scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. Live stats as well as live video webcast will be made available through www.tampaspartans.tv.
