TAMPA, Fla.- Seeing its 23-game win streak come to an end, the No.1 ranked University of Tampa baseball team split its Sunday double header against rival No.16 Florida Southern College. UT stumbled in its first contest, losing by a 13-6 score but then rebounded to take the second game 10-3.
The loss snaps the Spartans 23 game win streak, marking their first loss since Feb.16 against No.3 Georgia College. Head coach Joe Urso is now two wins away from his 600th career win.
Tampa ends the series with a 31-2 overall record with a 11-1 Sunshine State Conference mark as Florida Southern finishes the day at 22-11, 5-4 in SSC matchups.
Catcher Nick Tindall exploded for two home runs and six RBI on the day. The slugger belted a solo shot to left field in the first contest and then followed with a three-run homer to left center in game two. The junior leads the Spartan offense with eight home runs on the season.
Florida Southern took the first game by a 13-6 final score, unloading 21 hits in the first SSC loss for Tampa.
Senior Sean O'Brien was the lone UT hitter to have a multi-hit day as the first basemen tallied a pair of doubles in the first contest. FSC was led by Chris Dennis, who swung a 4-for-6 performance in game one with two runs and two RBI.
Florida Southern starter Brian Johnson (3-3) came out with the win, throwing seven and two thirds innings, while allowing four earned runs and striking out four batters.
UT hurler Chase Sparkman (1-1) was tagged with the loss, throwing four and two thirds, while giving up six runs.
In the rubber match of the series, Spartan starter Preston Packrall (4-0) returned UT to form, throwing six innings, allowing five hits, one run and striking out five.
Tindall picked up a pair of hits, including his three-run homer, en route to a five RBI second game. Senior Zach Gawrych notched a pair of hits to his credit, crossing the plate once for the home squad.
Moc starter Ben Richardson (5-3) was tabbed with the loss, as he pitched three innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits.
