Tampa’s Offense Explodes for Double Digit Victory Over Flagler
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.--Big time bats help the No.1 University of Tampa baseball team defeat Flagler College in dominant fashion, cruising to a 17-7 victory Wednesday night. UT amassed 17 hits in route to the double digit win.
With the win the top-ranked Spartans improve to an impressive 36-2 on the season, while the Saints drop to 18-21 for the year.
Slugger Tyler York led Tampa's offensive onslaught going 3-for-4, with four RBI. Third baseman Tyler Ding contributed hitting 3-for-5, while crossing the plate twice. Outfielder Stephen Dezzi also had a big game, 3-for-6 with three RBI. Michael Danner hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the ninth to put the Spartans up double digits.
Tampa fell behind early allowing three runs in the first frame, as the Spartans trailed 3-1 after one inning. However, UT's bats came to life in the fourth, exploding for nine runs off eight hits in the inning, taking a commanding 10-3 lead.
Flagler answered the Tampa barrage by scoring in each of the next two innings to pull within four runs after five frames.
UT added a plethora of runs late in the contest, to keep the game out of reach of the Saints.
Starting pitcher Jake Mielock (1-1) went three innings, allowing three runs on three hits, while striking out three, and was credited a no decision. Michael Calkins (6-0) picked up the win in relief, pitching one inning, allowing no earned runs, striking out two batters.
Flagler used 11 different pitchers, none of which threw more than two innings of work. Jarrod Widdows (0-1) was tabbed with the loss, throwing two thirds of an inning, while giving up four runs.
