Spartans Place Six on All-Region Team
Joe Urso wins his second NCBWA South Region Coach of the Year
TAMPA, Fla. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) have announced its 2016 All-South Region Teams. In total six Spartans were awarded All-Region with head coach Joe Urso being named the NCBWA Coach of the Year.
In the D2CCA, five UT players were awarded All-South Region honors. Earning a spot on the first team were second baseman Laz Rivera, centerfielder Casey Scoggins, and utility player J.D. Osborne. Placing on the second team were designated hitter Vin Cosenzo, and starting pitcher Christopher Williams.
The Division II Conference Commissioners Association encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education. The CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact Division II intercollegiate athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.
Williams, Rivera, and Scoggins also earned a spot on the NCBWA South-Region Second Team. Danny Lee also earned a spot as he was named Honorable Mention All-South Region. Head coach Joe Urso earns his second NCBWA South Region Coach of the Year award after leading his team to a 41-8 overall record and earning the top spot in the NCAA South Regional Tournament. Earlier in the season, Urso also earned his 700th career victory.
UT is set to open NCAA Regional play Friday at 3:00 p.m. where they will take on the winner of the Delta State and Lynn matchup.
