Falcons Cave to No. 2 Spartans in Season Opener
The University of Tampa baseball team took on the Bentley Falcons and were victorious with a score of 8-0.

TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa baseball team battled the Falcons from Bentley University to open up the 2017 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first three innings remained scoreless thanks to a pitcher's duel between Garrett Cave and Bill Sullivan.
- In the bottom of the fourth, senior Kevin Santa led off the inning with a single to left field. After Laz Rivera reached on a fielder's choice, Adrian Chacon hit a triple to deep right field scoring Rivera. J.D. Osborne came to the plate and singled to left field and scored Chacon giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead over the Falcons.
- Pitcher Cody Martin came in from the bullpen to relieve Cave in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth Conor Crile and Santa both reached on fielding errors. After a wild pitch, Santa advanced to third and Crile scored. L. Rivera singled through the left side scoring Santa, increasing the Spartans lead to 4-0.
- Santa singled to the shortstop to open up the bottom of the 8th inning. L. Rivera then singled to left field and Santa advanced to second. Osborne doubled down the left field line to score L. Rivera and Santa. Then Vin Cosenzo singled to second base, bringing Osborne home. Kyle Cotilletta came in the pinch run for Cosenzo and Chris Gaffney came up to the plate. Gaffney singled through the left side and scored Cotilletta.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Cave pitched four innings and recorded 10 strikeouts and only allowed two hits.
- Santa, Rivera, and Osborne each recorded two hits for the Spartans.
- Osborne had the team high 3 RBIs.
- Combined the pitchers recorded 14 strikeouts.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- This is the Spartans fourth straight season winning the opening game over the Bentley Falcons.
