
Spartans Sweep Sailfish in Weekend Series
The University of Tampa baseball team swept the Sailfish in a weekend matchup
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 6 University of Tampa Spartans battled the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish in a doubleheader and swept them.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final (Game One): No. 6 Tampa Spartans 12, Palm Beach Atlantic 6
Final (Game Two): No. 6 Tampa Spartans 11, Palm Beach Atlantic 9

All-time Series: Tampa leads the all-time series with a 21-6 record over the Sailfish.

How it happened (Game One):
- PBA was the first team on the board as they picked up three runs in the bottom of the second.
- The Spartans did not score until the top of the fourth when J.D. Osborne got on base after being hit by the pitch. Then Vin Cosenzo singled up the middle advancing Osborne to second. Connor Crile reached on a fielder's choice, Cosenzo reached second on a throwing error and Osborne made it to third. Danny Lee came up to bat and doubled down the left field line bringing Osborne and Cosenzo across the bag.
- The Spartans would pick up another run in the top of the sixth to tie the game with the Sailfish.
- In the bottom of the sixth the Sailfish retaliated with three runs that gave them the lead once again.
- In the top of the seventh Kevin Santa started the inning off by reaching on a fielding error by the second baseman. Laz Rivera then singled and advanced to second on a fielding error by left field. Darren Miller came up to the plate and doubled to left field bringing in two RBI, closing in on the Sailfish lead. Cosenzo then flied out to left field bringing Miller across home plate and tying the game.
- The Spartans and the Sailfish were tied until the top of the 10th inning when Cosenzo and Crile hit back-to-back doubles giving the Spartans the lead 7-6. Kyle Cotilletta came in to pinch run for Crile when Lee came up to bat. Lee reached on a fielder's choice and advanced Cotilletta to third. Richie Rivera was hit by the pitch in his at bat and Lee advanced to second. All players advanced a base after a wild pitch was thrown, Cotilletta scored. Santa was intentionally walked. L. Rivera came up next and singled through the left side scoring Lee and R. Rivera. Miller came up to the plate and singled through the right side bring Santa across the bag. Osborne flied out to center field in his at bat bringing L. Rivera home. The Spartans led 12-6 heading into the bottom of the 10th.
How it happened (Game Two):
- Game two started out with two three up-three down innings until the top of the third when the Spartans scored their first runs. The top of of the third started with back-to-back walks by Gaffney and Santa. L. Rivera hit a sacrifice bunt advancing Gaffney and Santa. Miller singled through the left side and scored Gaffney. Cosenzo then singled to center field and scored Santa.
- The Sailfish answered the Spartans runs with three runs themselves in the bottom of the third.
- In the top of the fifth, the Spartans picked up two runs to take the lead over the Sailfish 4-3.
- In the bottom of the fifth, the Sailfish retaliated by scoring four runs to take the lead once again 7-4.
- The Sailfish scored one run in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to increase their lead to 9-6.
- In the top of the eighth the Spartans regained the lead after they scored five runs to make the score 11-9.
Inside the Stats (Game One):
- Crile went 4-5 with one RBI and one double
- Miller went 2-5 with three RBI and one double
Inside the Stats (Game Two):
- Santa went 4-4 with four runs
- Miller went 3-4 with three RBI and two runs
- Cosenzo went 3-5 with four RBI and one run
Beyond the Box:
- Garrett Cave picked up a win in the first game and improved his record to 5-2.
- Mark Moclair earned the win in the second game and improved his record ro 1-1.
- Cheyne Bickel picked up his fourth save of the season.
