Eagles Outslug Spartans in Saturday Action

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The top-ranked University of Tampa baseball team dropped game two of a weekend series against Carson-Newman College.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Final: Carson-Newman 11, No. 1 Tampa 7

Records: Tampa Spartans (5-3), Carson-Newman Eagles (8-3)

All-time Series: Tampa leads the all-time series with a record of 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Similar to the Spartans on Friday, the Eagles got off to a fast start, plating three in the first inning. || Bottom 1 || 3-0 C-N
• Josh Rulli put Tampa on the board in the second as he drove home Nick Derr. The Eagles would quickly respond with a 5-spot in their next at bat. || Bottom 2 || 8-1 C-N
• Carson-Newman added another run in their next time at the plate. || Bottom 3 || 9-1 C-N
• A pair of home runs gave Tampa life in the seventh as Rulli had a solo shot followed by a two-run round-tripper by leadoff hitter Jose Cadenas.  || Top 7 || 9-4 C-N
• Carson-Newman added a single run in each of the next two innings. || Bottom 7 || 11-4 C-N
• The Spartans showed some fight in. the ninth, plating three runs on a pair of RBI singles from Dan Sullivan and Rulli and a bases-loaded walk by Derr.

INSIDE THE STATS:

• Sullivan continued his hot weekend with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with an RBI and a walk.
• Rulli added a pair of hits with three RBI.
• Derr reached base four times with three walks and a single.
• Starting for the Spartans was Jordan Leasure, who is now 1-1 on the season after going 1.2 innings.
• Braydon Nelson went 5.1 innings in relief, allowing just two runs.

OUTSIDE THE BOX:

• The Spartans saw their four game winning streak come to a close.
