Spartans Close out Maryville With Complete Performance
TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 3 University of Tampa Spartans completed a three-game sweep of the Maryville University Saints behind a strong team pitching performance.
Final: No. 3 Tampa Spartans 8, Maryville Saints 2
Records: Tampa (7-2), Maryville (0-3)
Location: UT Baseball Field || Tampa, Fla.
All-Time Series: Tampa leads the series 3-0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Maryville opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a two-out rally. A Michael Long walk and Camden Ruby single set up runners on the corners for the Saints. Ruby stole second base to put both runners in scoring position, where Nick Hoffman brought both in to score on a double into the left field corner. | 2-0 Saints
- Tampa responded with authority in the bottom of the second inning. E.J. Doskow led off with a double into the right-field corner. Maryville retired the next batter, but back-to-back doubles by E.J. Cumbo and Danny Gutcher tied the game at two. The Spartans continued to threaten and took the lead without the ball leaving the infield. As the top of the lineup came to bat, a Jordan Lala walk and Drew Ehrhard infield single loaded the bases. Tampa took the lead when J.D. Urso was hit by a pitch, bringing up Anthony Nunez. Lala scored on a wild pitch during his plate appearance, advancing all baserunners up a base. Ehrhard came into score on a Nunez RBI groundout. | 5-2 Spartans
- The Spartans were able to add a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lala's second walk of the game and another base hit by Ehrhard put runners on the corners for Tampa. A sacrifice fly to center field by Urso plated Lala. | 6-2 Spartans
- Urso continued his run-scoring ways for Tampa in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one runner on, Urso cranked his first home run of the season over the left-field wall. | 8-2 Spartans
- Beckett White and Alex Canney combined for six scoreless innings of relief, striking out a total of 10 Saints to allow Tampa to cruise to the win. | Final: 8-2 Spartans
