E.J. Cumbo, Alex Canney Rewarded With SSC Weekly Awards

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The University of Tampa had a pair of student-athletes recognized as E.J. Cumbo was named the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week as teammate Alex Canney was tabbed the Pitcher of the Week.

Cumbo is selected as Player of the Week for his play in a single game against Valdosta State and a sweep of Florida Tech. The junior from East Meadow, N.Y., was 10-for-19 at the plate with five runs scored and eight runs batted in last week. Against VSU, Cumbo went 3-for-6 at the plate with a stolen base, double, run scored, and three RBI in a losing effort. During the series at Florida Tech, he tallied at least two hits, a run scored, and an RBI in all three games. He also added two sacrifices, two hit-by-pitch, and a walk on the road trip. For the week, the outfielder tallied a .526 batting average, a .591 on-base percentage, and a .632 slugging percentage. Defensively, he recorded four putouts and an assist in five attempts. The weekly award is the second of his career.

Canney grabs Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time in 2023 for his work on the mound in a 6-0 win at Florida Tech. The Valrico, Florida native started game two for the Spartans, allowing three hits and no runs in seven innings. Canney earned the victory by striking out six and walking one batter. The weekly award is the third of his career.

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of April 3 - 9, 2023. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.
