
No. 5 Tampa Outscores Eckerd 30-3 in Doubleheader Sweep
TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 5 University of Tampa baseball team took a pair of games in a Saturday twin-bill with Eckerd College, easily handling the Tritons.
Final Score Game One: No. 5 University of Tampa Spartans 13, Eckerd College Tritons 0
Final Score Game Two: No. 5 University of Tampa Spartans 17, Eckerd College Tritons 3
Records: Tampa (30-7, 19-2 SSC), Eckerd (16-18, 5-13 SSC)

All-Time Series: Tampa now leads the all-time series by a 123-43 mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE:
- UT took the lead in the first as leadoff hitter Jordan Lala scored on a single by E.J. Cumbo. | 1-0 Spartans
- The Spartans scored four runs in the bottom of the third. A single by J.D. Urso scored one, as Cumbo, Anthony Nunez and Jamarcus Lyons each added an RBI. | 5-0 Spartans
- Danny Gutcher launched his first home run of the day on a solo shot in the sixth. | 6-0 Spartans
- The bottom of the eighth included seven Spartan runs as Nunez started the scoring with a solo home run. Adam Hunt added a two-run single while Luis Rodriguez drove in two UT runs on a double. T.J. Palma and Parker Schlichte also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. | 13-0 Spartans
INSIDE THE STATS – GAME ONE:
- Alex Canney nearly went the distance as he went 8.0 innings in a scoreless effort to improve to 5-0 on the season. The sophomore scattered just five hits and struck out three Eckerd hitters.
- Paul Sullivan was called upon in the ninth as he tossed a scoreless frame.
- Lyons and Gutcher were the lone Spartans with multiple hits as they added two apiece.
- Cumbo, Nunez and Rodriguez each drove in two runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO:
- Tampa enjoyed a five-run first, with a run-scoring on singles off the bats of Cumbo and Lyons. A three-run home run by Gutcher against his alma mater put the Spartans in the driver's seat. | 5-0 Spartans
- A two-run single by Eckerd cut the margin to three runs in the top of the second. | 5-2 Spartans
- Drew Ehrhard connected on a two-run home run in the second. | 7-2 Spartans
- Gutcher smacked his third home run of the day in the third inning. | 8-2 Spartans
- Eckerd had an RBI double to add a run to the board in the fourth. | 8-3 Spartans
- A two-run single off the bat of Nunez scored a pair of Spartans in the fifth. | 10-3 Spartans
- Cumbo added to the UT lead with a two-run double in the sixth as a third run scored on a Triton error. | 13-3 Spartans
- An infield single by Santiago Garavito crossed a run in the seventh. Ehrhard would also have an RBI single while Lala had a two-run single. | 17-3 Spartans
INSIDE THE STATS – GAME TWO:
- Lala and Cumbo each had three hits as Lala would drive in two runs and score three from his leadoff spot. Cumbo drove in three and scored a pair of runs.
- Gutcher drove in four runs and scored three behind his two home runs.
- Eli Thurmond started for Tampa and went 3.2 innings.
- Dalton Ross moved to 2-1 as the winning pitcher following 2.1 scoreless innings of work.
- Braydon Nelson added a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
- The final 2.0 innings went to Jack Brosky as he allowed no hits or walks and struck out four Tritons.
- Ehrhard continues to move closer to Ronnie Merrill's all-time hits record of 339 at Tampa. Ehrhard now stands at 322.
