CHICAGO - The Chicago White Sox have announced that former University of Tampa left-handed pitcher Sammy Peralta has been promoted to the major league club. Peralta will be available for Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Twins.
A member of the 2019 national championship team, the Orlando, Fla., native was a key performer in the Spartans bullpen en route to a 34-9 season and the program's eighth national championship. Peralta would appear in 22 games for UT, striking out 74 batters in 42.0 innings pitched. Peralta would finish the 2019 season with five consecutive scoreless outings as he did not allow an earned run in his final 13.2 innings pitched.
In the national semifinal against Mercyhurst, Peralta tossed 5.0 scoreless frames in Cary, N.C., allowing just three scattered hits. He was the winning pitcher in the game, striking out nine hitters while walking none. He also recorded a season-best 11 strikeouts in a 4.1 inning effort against Sunshine State Conference rival Florida Southern College.
Drafted by the White Sox in the 18th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft, Peralta is in his fourth season in the organization. He opened the 2023 season with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights, Peralta was 1-1 with a 3.52 ERA in eight appearances in the International League. In 15.1 innings, he registered 15 strikeouts while walking just three opposing batters.
Peralta has appeared in 91 career games in the White Sox minor league system, and owns a 10-7 record with a 3.45 ERA while working his way through the organization. He has struck out 217 opposing batters in his 169.1 innings of work, while also tallying 10 saves.
Peralta becomes the eighth player in UT history to advance to the Majors, joining Jeff Carter, Charlie Manning, Tino Martinez, Sam Militello, Lou Piniella, Mike Rabelo and Ozzie Timmons.
