TAMPA, Fla. – The #2 University of Tampa Spartans sweep #12 Newberry to wrap up opening weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• After a leadoff single from Jake Griffith, Brayden Woodburn, Santiago Garavito, and Mike Valdez would all walk to bring in the Spartan's first run. Danny Gutcher would then fly out to right field to bring home Woodburn. Macallister Jorgensen would get a bases-loaded walk, and E.J. Cumbo would hit an RBI single later in the inning. • Cumbo would rip a fastball to centerfield for another RBI single, and Griffith hit a sacrifice fly. Bot 5 | 7-2 Tampa
• Nico Saladino hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Bot 6 | 8-2 Tampa
• Garavito and Maddox King both with RBI-singles. Bot 7 | 10-2 Tampa
• Ray Mercer and Anthony Nunez both with RBI-singles. Bot 8 | 12-2 Tampa

AT THE PLATE:

• Cumbo: 3-5, 3 RBIs, & R.

ON THE MOUND:

• Tobin Moran picked up his second win of the season and went 4 innings, giving up one run, 3 hits, and striking out 1.
• Ashton Pocol followed in relief, pitching two innings and giving up 1 run and 2 hits.
• Andrew Carson followed in relief, pitching two innings, striking out 2 without giving up any runs and 1 hit.
• Nunez closed out the game with a scoreless frame, striking out 1.
