Spartans Spear the Sailfish

TAMPA, Fla. – The #1 University of Tampa Spartans spear the Sailfish in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

Game One Final: #1 Tampa Spartans 13, Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 4

Game Two Final: #1 Tampa Spartans 13, Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 3 (7 innings)

Records: Tampa (17-0, 3-0 SSC), Palm Beach Atlantic (4-12, 1-5 SSC)

Location: UT Baseball Field | Tampa, Fla. 

All-Time Series: Spartans improve to 38-7 over the Sailfish and are now winners of 14 straight over them.

GAME ONE

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• After a leadoff single by Mike Valdez, Santiago Garavito connected on his fourth home run of the season to tie the game up. Bot 4 | 2-2 Tie
• After back-to-back singles by E.J. Cumbo and Brayden Woodburn to lead off the inning, Stephen Klein grounded into a double play; however, it would bring home Cumbo to take the lead. Bot 5 | 3-2 Tampa
• After the bases became juiced, from singles by Jake Griffith and Cumbo and Danny Gutcher reaching base on a walk, Woodburn smoked one past the third basemen to bring home Nico Saladino and Gutcher. Cumbo would come around later in the inning to score on a wild pitch. Bot 6 | 6-2 Tampa
• The Spartans put up a seven spot in the eighth. Cumbo and Anthony Nunez both scored on pitches, getting past the catcher. Maddox King scored after Gutcher walked. Klein scored on a groundout. Saladino capped the scoring with a home run to right field. Bot 8 | 13-3 Tampa

AT THE PLATE:

• Cumbo: 3-6 & 3 R's.
• Garavito: 3-4, 2 RBI's, R, & BB.
• Woodburn: 2-2, 2 RBI's, & 2 BB's.
• Saladino: 1-5, 3 RBI's, & 2 R's.

ON THE MOUND:

• Alex Canney improves to 4-0 on the season, pitching 6 quality innings, giving up 3 hits and 2 runs while striking out 3.
• Andrew Carson relieved Canney, pitching 2 innings, giving up 3 hits and 2 runs while striking out 3.
• Drew Howard threw a scoreless ninth inning, including a strikeout.

GAME TWO (7 innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• After Woodburn singled and then stole second base, Saladino drove him smoking a single to center field. Bot 2 | 1-0 Tampa
• The Spartans put up a seven-spot on the board in the third. Griffith led off the inning with a walk. Klein followed with a towering drive to right field. Valdez would come around later in the inning to score on a throwing error by the third basemen. Woodburn and J.P. Gates would score on back-to-back passed balls. Cumbo would finish things with a double to left center to bring Macallister Jorgensen and Saladino home. Bot 3 | 8-0 Tampa
•  After the bases became loaded up from walks by Griffith and Valdez and a single off the bat of Klein, Griffith would come around to score on a passed ball. Kelin would also score on a Garavito single. Bot 5 | 10-0 Tampa
• The bases became juiced once again when Aiden Nolasco was hit by a pitch, Matthew Fogel walked, and Grant Jordan walked. Jorgensen followed with a walk to bring home Nolasco. Fogel scored on a wild pitch, and King doubled home Jordan to wrap up the game via run rule. Final | 13-3 Tampa

• Garavito: 2-4 & RBI.
• Cumbo: 1-4 & 2 RBI's.

ON THE MOUND:

• Jake Stipp picks up his first career win as a Spartan, pitching 4 innings while only giving up 2 hits and not allowing a single run while striking out 2.
• Ashton Pocol relieved Stipp, pitching 2 scoreless and hitless innings, including striking out 4.
• Jack Brodsky relieved Pocol; however, he had to exit the game due to injury.
• Torin Byrnes replaced Brodsky, recording the final two outs.
