NCBWA Tabs Anthony Nunez as South Region Player of the Week

LAKELAND, Fla. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) has announced the South Region Player of the Week as Tampa's Anthony Nunez and the NCBWA South Region Pitcher of the Week as Shorter's Coy Martin.

Nunez was selected as the South Region Player of the Week for his performance in a sweep of Florida Tech. The junior from Hialeah, Fla., was 7-for-11 at the plate with three home runs and a double. He scored seven times and drove in seven runs during Tampa's three games against the Panthers last week. Nunez tallied at least two hits, a run scored, and an RBI in all three games. He also added two stolen bases and two walks to his weekly stat sheet. The infielder's top game of the series was the finale, where he went 2-for-4 at the plate with two home runs, four RBI, three runs scored, two stolen bases, and a walk. The junior finished the week with a .636 batting average, a .692 on-base percentage, and a 1.545 slugging percentage. Defensively, Nunez recorded four a putout and nine assists in 10 attempts. This is the first regional award for Nunez this year and the fifth Player of the Week for Tampa.

Martin earned his first regional weekly award and first for Shorter after he had eight strikeouts in two appearances on Saturday to help Shorter to a series win over UAH. The junior lefty was credited with the victory to move to 3-1 on the year, as the Hawks won the series finale, 9-0. Martin went the distance in the outing throwing six strikeouts while allowing two hits and three walks. He had three perfect innings in the start and allowed just one UAH runner to reach scoring position. Martin began the day with a one-inning hitless relief appearance striking out two of three batters faced on 11 pitches.

Nunez and Martin move on to the NCBWA National Player of the Week ballot to be announced on Thursday, April 18.
