J.P. Gates named tournament Most Outstanding Player. Joined by E.J. Cumbo, Stephen Klein, Alex Canney on all-tournament team.

Groundout to shortstop and the Spartans are the 2024 National Champs!!!

Tampa leads 8-3 and is 3 outs away from ninth national championship. J.P. Gates back to the mound for bottom of 9th.

Freshman Maddox King picks great time for his first career home run. Leadoff shot to left gives Spartans 8-3 lead.

3:59 pm

J.P. Gates concludes third inning of work on the mound with another scoreless inning. Back to the plate in top of 9th with 7-3 lead.

3:43 pm

Gates needs nine pitches to sit Rams down in order in bottom of 7th. Top of order for UT in top 8 with 7-3 lead.

3:38 pm

Stretch time in Cary. J.P. Gates back to the mound to pitch bottom of 7th with 7-3 UT lead.

3:31 pm

Gates escapes bottom of sixth with bases loaded. Tampa to the plate in top seven with 7-3 lead.

Brand new game in Cary. Spartans lead 7-3 as J.P. Gates heads to mound in bottom of sixth. Alex Canney's day is complete as he throws 5.0 innings, allowing three runs and striking out two.

3:17 pm

J.P. Gates finds the trees in right-center. Two-run shot scores Stephen Klein as Spartans now lead 7-3 in top of sixth.

And the play stands!!! Tampa leads 5-3.

3:15 pm

First review of the game as Angelo State challenges whether Stephen Klein double was fair or foul. If play stands, three Spartans score and UT leads 5-3.

3:12 pm

Sacrifice hit scores runner, game now tied 3-3.

3:09 pm

E.J. Cumbo with his 400th career hit as he comes through with bases loaded single to cut deficit to 3-2. Angelo State pitching change as Anthony Nunez will hit with bases loaded.

2:59 pm

ASU strands pair of runners and does not score following leadoff double. UT to plate in top 6th as it continues to trail 3-1.

2:53 pm

Spartans fail to score in fifth after leadoff double. UT has left eight runners on base as Rams set to hit in bottom 5th with 3-1 lead.

After allowing an ASU run in fourth, Anthony Nunez starts fifth with leadoff double.

2:28 pm

Nico Saladino with an RBI single against drawn in infield to score Mike Valdez, making the score 2-1 Angelo State in top 4th.

UT strands runners on second and third as Santiago Garavito flies out to rightfield. J.P. Gates had previously doubled. ASU leads 2-0 as we head to bottom of third.

Anthony Nunez with first hit of afternoon for Tampa. Single to right center comes with one out in top 3rd.

Rams add another in bottom 2, now lead 2-0 as top of order set to hit for Tampa.

Spartans still looking for first hit as ASU set to hit with 1-0 lead in bottom 2. UT has drawn three walks, but also has three strikeouts at the plate.

1:50 pm

Similar to Spartans in top 1, Rams strand runners at 2nd and 3rd as Canney with strikeout to end the first. UT set to hit, trailing 1-0.

1:47 pm

Double steal with runners on 1st and 3rd and Rams are up 1-0. Runners now at 1st and 2nd after walk. One out on the board.

Ceremonial first pitch being thrown out. UT alums and supporters Fred Pollock, Stu Williams and Russell Bruno are proudly representing the Spartans.

Angelo State players being announced.

Tampa reserves and starting lineups being announced. UT crowd cheering heavily for Spartans.

Defending Champs to Throw Caleb Heuertz

Angelo State will go with senior RHP from San Angelo, Texas, Caleb Heuertz. He owns a 2-1 record with 7 saves, and carries a 1.76 ERA.

1:15 pm

Team huddle concludes and Spartans head to dugout before intros and pregame festivities begin.

Alex Canney to Pitch for Spartans

Junior from Tampa's Durant High School will take the bump. The Spartan legacy and son of Matt Canney (1993-95) enters with a 13-3 record and 3.10 ERA. In 101.2 innings, Canney has registered 97 strikeouts with a 1.16 WHIP. The three-year letterwinner will make his 48th career appearance for UT with a career record of 23-3 with a 2.61 ERA.

BP concludes. Some relaxation time before changing in to game uniforms and heading to field.
