
Ninth Inning Wild Pitch Helps No. 1 Spartans Defeat Cougars
SAN MARCOS, CA. – The #1 University of Tampa Spartans scored a game-winning run in the ninth to beat Cal State San Marcos.

All-Time Series: This was the 1st meeting between these two programs. The Spartans now lead 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Maddox King would lead the inning with a double down the left-field line.
Jordan Williams followed with a walk. Later in the inning,
J.D. Urso would reach base on a fielder's choice. With two outs and first and third, Urso would steal second, and the Cougars catcher would try to gun down King at third base; however, he would overthrow the Third baseman, and both King and Urso would come into score. Mid 3 | 2-0 Tampa - Jhoander Irigoyen would double down the left-field line to lead off the inning. Lenny Ashby would follow with a double to center field to bring home Irigoyen. With two outs, King would double to right center, his second of the game, to bring home Ashby. Mid 4 | 4-0 Tampa
- Jake Griffith would pinch hit to lead off the inning and draw a walk. A.J. Graham would pinch run for him and come around to score on a wild pitch. Mid 9 | 5-4 Tampa

ON THE MOUND:
- Skylar Gonzalez started on the mound. He threw 5.2 innings, giving up 2 runs while striking out 3. Gonzalez finished with a no decision on the day.
- Eli Thurmond came in relief for Gonzalez. He threw 0.2 innings, giving up 2 runs while striking out 2.
- Michael Alfonso came in relief for Thurmond. He threw 2.2 scoreless innings while striking out 2 and picking up his first win on the season. He is now 1-0.
