
Former UT Basketball Player Mark Borders Signs Professional Contract in Brazil
TAMPA, Fla. - After playing the past two seasons in Mexico, former University of Tampa men's basketball player Mark Borders has signed a contract with the CONTI/AMEA/ASSIS basketball team in the Brazilian NBB League.
After concluding his career at UT in 2006, Borders played one season in Turkey with the Lig 2 in Muilkiye.
In his last two seasons in Mexico, he led the league in assists in 2008-09 after leading the league in steals and ranking second in assists in the 2007-08 season with Santos de Potosi. He has also spent his summers playing in city championships in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.
Borders played one season with Murray State (Ky.) University before transferring to Tampa for his final three seasons. He left UT as the school's all-time assist leader with 649. He also owns the top two single season records in the category with 250 (2005-06) and 213 (2004-05).
While averaging 15.0 points per game, he ranks seventh in that category as he currently ranks fifth with a .358 three-point field goal percentage and fourth with 202 career steals.
The 2006 Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year was also a three-time all-SSC performer while being on the first team as a junior and senior. He was also a member of the 2005-06 all-South Region team while being a national finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, which is awarded to the top point guard in all NCAA divisions.
