
Rashad Callaway and Callum Townsend Garner SSC Honors
ORLANDO, Fla. - University of Tampa men's basketball players Rashad Callaway and Callum Townsend were among the players honored as the Sunshine State Conference announced its 2009-10 award winners.
Callaway was named first-team all-SSC for the second consecutive season as Townsend secured a spot on the all-freshman team. The selections were announced by commissioner Jay Jones on Thursday. Voting for the all-conference men's basketball team was conducted among the league's head basketball coaches and sports information directors.
Florida Southern's John Thompson was selected Player of the Year, while FSC's Linc Darner was named Coach of the Year. Lynn's Michel Vidal was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year, and Nova Southeastern's Brian Cahill was chosen Freshman of the Year.
Receiving all-SSC first-team honors with Callaway and Thompson were Chris Hall (Lynn), Rion Rayfield (Florida Southern) and Nick Wolf (Rollins).
Earning all-SSC second-team recognition were Myk Brown (Rollins), Zaronn Cann (Eckerd), Tony Dennison (Barry), Jordan Prais (Saint Leo) and Justin Sedlak (Florida Tech).
Florida Southern's Brandon Jenkins and Barry's Erick Nsangou received honorable mention.
An all-freshman team was also selected. Joining Townsend and Cahill on the team were Damon Ellison (Florida Southern), Dominick Robinson (Saint Leo) and Luke Roesch (Nova Southeastern).
Callaway, a junior guard from Bayonne, N.J., led Tampa in scoring (21.1 ppg), assists (167), steals (64), field goals (160) and free throw percentage (.816). He scored double figures in 25 games, including 17 with 20-plus points. His top performance was a 45-point outburst at Lynn on Jan. 9.
Townsend, a guard from Riverview, enjoyed a successful freshman campaign while ranking second on the team in scoring at 10.7 points per game. His 70 3-pointers was first among all Spartans while being second with 115 rebounds.
