Tampa Breaks Another School Record In Win Over PBA
TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 16 University of Tampa (16-0) men's basketball team continued its record start, this time breaking the program record for consecutive wins. UT surpassed the previous school record of 15 games from the 1999-2000 squad with an 82-65 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic University (9-7).
Fred Woods came off the bench to ignite a first half rally where Tampa pulled away from the Sailfish, turning a five point advantage into a 41-25 tilt heading to the final possession of the first half. PBA converted on the front end of a pair of free throws as UT took a 41-26 lead to the break.
The Spartans maintained the double figure advantage for the entire second half, leading by as many as 24 points in the final half.
Woods finished with his second double-double of the season, netting 14 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. The senior forward also led UT with six blocked shots in 30 minutes of action.
Rashad Callaway paced UT with a team-leading 24 points as Anthony Griffis and Callum Townsend also scored in double figures with 16 and 10 points respectively. Callaway dished out a team-high six assists as Griffis registered five steals.
Tampa outshot PBA by a 42.6 to 38.2 percent mark, with the Sailfish winning the battle of the boards 43-40. UT carried a decisive advantage in 3-pointers (9 UT, 3 PBA) and turnovers (12 UT, 17 PBA).
The Spartans return to Sunshine State Conference play on Wednesday as it hosts longtime rival Florida Southern College at 7:30 p.m. at the Bob Martinez Sports Center.
