Spartans Set to Host Conference Opponent Barry
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday as it plays host to Sunshine State Conference opponent Barry University. The game will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. at the Bob Martinez Sports Center.
Entering tomorrow's contest, the 17-2 Spartans look to bounce back after losing to Florida Tech on Wednesday. Despite the setback, Tampa comes in ranked as the No. 1 team in the NCAA South Region and No. 16 in the nation.
Head coach Richard Schmidt looks to get one step closer to his 600th career victory as he currently needs seven wins to reach the milestone. Tampa looks to capitalize and earn an 18th win this season against a 5-12 Barry squad. They are 2-6 in conference play, while the Spartans are 6-2. Senior Rashad Calloway leads UT averaging 18 points and 5.7 assists per game.
Barry is led by senior Willie Whitfield, averaging 15.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. The Buccaneers are coming off a 74-69 SSC victory against Saint Leo after losing their previous four contests.
The Spartans lead the all time series 37-16. However in the past two years Barry edges out Tampa 3-2. The Buccaneers are also coming off a season sweep against the Spartans while Tampa won the first contest of the year 73-64 at Barry on December 4.
Tickets will be available at the gate for $5 (adults) and $3 (senior citizens and students). UT students and faculty/staff are admitted free with a valid UT identification card.
UT will offer live stats and a video webcast of the game through www.tampaspartans.com.
