Jon Riles Signs NLI To Attend The University of Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's basketball staff has announced the signing of Jon Riles to a National Letter of Intent (NLI). Riles will enroll at UT for the fall of 2011 semester and be eligible to play in 2011-12.
"Jonathan is going to be a great addition to the Tampa basketball family," says head coach Richard Schmidt. "He played for a great program at ANC under head coach Kevin Givens. We're expecting him to come in and play a significant role from day one."
A 6-foot-1 guard from North Wales, Pa., Riles attended the Academy of the New Church for coach Kevin Givens. At ANC, Riles teamed with Rakeem Christmas and Malcolm Gilbert, who have signed NLI's to attend Syracuse and Pittsburgh respectively. Another teammate, Savon Goodman, is a top prospect in the class of 2012.
Riles was named the 2009 and 2010 Defensive Player of the Year and won the City of Palms Skills Contest. He was also ANC's leading scorer in 2009 while being named the MVP of a gamer versus Westtown High School. He was also the recipient of the Coaches' Award and named the Most Improved Player.
In 2010, Riles was part of the ANC team that defeated Findlay Prep, who was previously ranked as the No. 1 high school team in the nation.
He was also chosen to compete in the State Farm Tournament of Champions (Illinois), City of Palms Classic (Florida), Seven Cities Roundball Classic (Virginia) and the ESPNU Hoophall Classic (Mass.).
Riles also played AAU basketball for the Bucks County Hawks in the summer of 2010 and the 5K Logisitics in the summer of 2009. He was named the MVP of both teams. His teams also won the 2008 Friends and state championships and the 2009 Friends League title.
"Jonathan comes from a great family that values the academic standards that are set here at UT," says assistant coach Justin Pecka. "We're excited to see him excel both on and off the court. When Coach Schmidt and I saw Jonathan play back in December, Coach Schmidt pointed at Jonathan and said 'I want that guy.' We're thrilled to have him join our family."
