Spartans Drop Close Battle To No. 14 Mavericks
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The University of Tampa Spartans men's basketball team (2-3) fell to the No. 14 Minnesota State-Mankato Mavericks (4-1) 73-72 in day one of the Eckerd College Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Spartans held the lead for most of the game, but Minnesota State used two big runs to give them the victory. In the first half, the Mavericks used a 21-7 run to end the half leading the Spartans 35-32. In the second half, with Tampa leading 71-63, MSU used a 10-1 run in the final 3:31 of the game to propel them to victory.
All five starters for the Spartans scored in double figures for Tampa. Eugene McCrory led the way for the Spartans by putting up 16 points and six rebounds for UT. Also in double figures were Matt Johnson (14), Austin Rettig (13), Jordan Davis (12), and Marcel Robinson (10). From the bench, Tyler Zacur added seven points.
Tampa will be in action tomorrow against University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon. The game is set to start at 5:30PM.
