UT’s Matt Johnson Honored as Academic All-District Selection
MCLEAN, Va. - The University of Tampa's Matt Johnson was rewarded for his excellent work in the classroom as a 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-District® Men's Basketball player, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The list has been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.
Voting for Academic All-District is conducted among member sports information directors across the district.
Johnson, a sophomore guard from Columbus, N.J., owns a 3.74 GPA with a major in accounting. He becomes the fourth academic all-district selection in program history and the first since Glyn Hunter in 2010-11. A member of the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll, Johnson has earned his newest academic award in his first year of eligibility for the honor.
While playing in all 20 games and being a regular starter for the Spartans, Johnson is fourth on the team in scoring at 6.9 points per contest. He also ranks second on the squad with 94 assists and 32 steals.
The Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes that are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the third year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2013-14 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected at a date.
