
Tampa Completes Season Sweep of Florida Tech
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (13-8, 6-5 SSC) men's basketball team held off Florida Tech (13-9, 3-8 SSC) for a 70-62 Sunshine State Conference victory on Saturday at the Martinez Center.
Tampa's lead reach double figures just over halfway into the first half, as the Spartans led by as many as 12 before taking a 36-25 lead to the half.
The Panthers would score the first points of the second half to come within one point of UT, and eventually take their first lead of the afternoon at 39-38 with 13:31 to play. Austin Rettig would put Tampa back in the driver's seat with a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions.
Another long-range shot by Rettig ballooned the Spartan lead to 53-42 with 9:31 to play. The Panthers would rally to within two points, with 1:18 to play. UT had an answer once again, scoring nine straight points to secure the victory.
Eugene McCrory led Tampa in scoring with 17 points as the senior big-man was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field. He also pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds.
Senior floor general Jordan Davis added 15 points to go with a game-high 10 assists. The Spartans connected on nine 3-pointers, shooting at a 52.9 percent clip from beyond the arc.
The Spartans will play host to Eckerd College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., before playing a pair of road contests. Live stats and a broadcast will be available through TampaSpartans.tv.
